EXPEDITIONS: AFRICA
This expedition started out in Johannesburg and ended up in Cape Town,
both in South Africa. We covered more than 3500 miles traveling through South Africa, Botswana and Namibia.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE EXPEDITIONS:
Our expedition had five teams of four people each sleeping in rooftop tents at various campgrounds along the roads. In some campgrounds.
We traved through four National Parks. The Kruger National Park in South Africa, the Chobe and the Moremi National Parks in Botswana and the Etosha National Park in Namibia. Each park has its own attractions and they are very different from each other. The only thing they have in common is that they are full of wild animals — elephants, springboks, giraffes, zebras, impalas, gnus, oryx, monkeys and hippopotamus.
On this expedition, we lived Africa to its fullest. Crossing parks and borders wasn’t as contentious as you might think. South Africa is the most congenial of expedition locations on the continent. We felt very free to roam the national parks and visit all the different water holes where the animals always end up for a cool drink. We camped every nigh and made our own dinners. Traveling in such capable and fully-loaded off-road vehicles with two 2 person rooftop tents, a fridge, water tanks, a stove, etc. left us wanting for nothing. Even with the rooftop tents and vehicle luxuries, almost all the campgrounds had great facilities including hot water to take showers and do dishes, clean restrooms and security. Contrary to popular opinion, the south Africans have a multitude of conveniences in terms of caravanning, camping and adventure travel, but keep in mind this was NOT a luxury safari. There were safari lodges next to the campgrounds that cost $500 dollars a night. Luxury is an option when on safari in South Africa, but with the camping and rooftop tents, we saw the same things, and possibly more than the people that spend 10000+ dollars per safari — only we did it in a way that allowed us to experience it every day. We were able drive across the international borders, socialize with locals, try local food and live Africa inside the bubble.
Roads. Surprisingly, the roads were in very good condition. South Africa was paved, Botswana was a little bit challenging to cross thru the sand banks of the Chobe National Park and Namibia was well-maintained dirt roads. Where this wasn’t a trip with potential danger around every corner the many might think it would be in Africa, it was still one of the most exciting, revealing and beautiful expeditions to date.
COSTS AND OTHER THINGS TO CONSIDER:
Vehicles to rent, vehicle insurance, fuel, food, hotels and campgrounds, airport transfers, park admissions, border crossings, logistics and planning. There’s also a helicopter ride option if you wish to fly over the Victoria falls. Make sure you have visas for all the three countries. Make sure your driver license is valid in these countries, otherwise you will have to get an international driver license. Keep tip money handy.
The places we visited have Malaria, so it’s important to get your vaccinations or pills before the trip. Consult your physician on how and where to get these pills. While Malaria can be a serious illness, it’s no reason to fear an African expedition — preparation makes all the difference. Consider going in the winter, so there is less water around and less mosquitoes. Make sure you buy a good repellent and use it accordingly. Every year millions of people travel to the south of Africa and very few get Malaria. If you take your precautions, the risk of getting infected is very low, but there is always a chance so take the necessary precautions.
If you’d like to see in a little more detail what the expedition was like, give us a call or send a check for $10.00 with your name and address and we’ll ship out a DVD of our 2005 Africa expedition. Because this was a Bolivia to Africa expedition the video is in spanish. Regardless, it will still give you similar views and travel conditions full of beautiful scenery, types of animals you’ll see, campgrounds and a taste of the local cultures. A must see for anyone interested in doing an African Expedition.
Africa is a magic place. It's awesome landscapes, cultural richness, inspiring history and abundant wildlife grips the adventurers and doesn't let go. We assure you that, like us, you will someday want to return to the dark continent. It's magic will inspire your adventurous spirit.
