The colored earth at the base of the photo is actually a living organism. It consists of algaes and microbial life-forms that add just one layer of nourishment to the desert food-chain. It grows  abundantly in areas of the Cabeza Prieta Wildlife Refuge, but is as fragile as Alpine Tundra. One tire tread through the skin, and it might take 100 years to re-grow.
